The Toric IOL is a lens designed to correct astigmatism. Astigmatism is when the surface of the cornea has both flatter and steeper curves, similar to the shape of a football. When the cornea has an uneven curvature, vision becomes distorted. In order to correct this distortion, correction has to be placed in your glasses or contact lenses. If you need cataract surgery and have astigmatism, you may want to consider a Toric IOL to help correct the astigmatism to give you the best possible quality of vision after surgery. While distance vision is improved, most patients still need to wear glasses for other distances, like reading and computer work. Most insurance companies will pay a small portion of this IOL.
